As a North Carolina native, I’ve explored almost every inch of our beautiful coastline — and I’m sharing MY favorite coastal towns to visit this year, in no particular order! Whether you’re into wide beaches, historic boardwalks, or quiet island escapes, this guide has something for every kind of traveler.
1. Southport
Historic streets, oak trees, and a calm coastal vibe. While there’s no beach in town, you’re just a 20-minute drive from Oak Island. Southport is perfect for catching a ferry ride to Bald Head, shopping at their local Southport General Market Store, and sitting by the water, reading a book, and watching boats glide through the harbor.
Local tip: Eat at Provision Company, then take a walk along the waterfront at sunset. I also loved eating at Edgewater 122 if you’re looking for something a little fancier.
2. Oak Island
This is the no-frills, bring-your-own-chair beach spot that locals love. It’s quiet, spacious, and great for families. There’s a charming lighthouse to climb and miles of coastline to explore. Plenty of restaurants to choose from too!
Local tip: Early morning is best for shell hunting and dolphin spotting.
3. Bald Head Island
You’ll have to take a ferry to get here — and you’ll love that there are no cars, just golf carts and bikes. This upscale, peaceful island feels like a hidden paradise. Maritime forests, marsh views, and the historic Old Baldy lighthouse make it unforgettable.
Local tip: Bring your own groceries if you’re staying overnight — and book ferry spots and golf carts ahead in the summer! If you’re lucky enough to grab a table at Jailhouse Provisions, I recommend eating there!
4. Wrightsville Beach
Clean, vibrant, and full of energy, Wrightsville Beach is perfect for paddle boarding, surfing, or just soaking up the sun. It’s also just minutes from Wilmington’s historic riverfront for shopping, dining, and nightlife.
Local tip: Sunrise at the pier is worth waking up early for, and then go grab a coffee at Periwink while you’re up!
5. Carolina Beach
A little retro, a little rowdy, and a lot of fun. Carolina Beach has a classic boardwalk, live music in the summer, and easy beach access. It’s great for families, couples, or groups looking for a more social beach scene.
Local tip: Don’t leave without trying Britt’s Donuts — it’s a rite of passage.
6. Kure Beach
Just down the road from Carolina Beach, Kure is its quieter cousin. It’s known for its long fishing pier and proximity to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. It’s small, friendly, and ideal for a laid-back escape.
Local tip: Pack a picnic and catch the ferry to Southport for a double-destination day.
7. Emerald Isle
Calm surf, beautiful water, and a true family beach town. Emerald Isle is perfect for long beach days, grilling out at your vacation rental, and watching the sunset from the sound side.
Local tip: Bring bikes — the whole island is bike-friendly and scenic.
8. Topsail Beach
A quieter coastal option known for its sea turtle rescue center and peaceful shores. It’s a great spot for families or couples wanting to unplug.
Local tip: Visit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital for a unique local experience – reservations required!
9. Duck
One of the prettiest and most peaceful towns on the Outer Banks. Known for its soundside boardwalk, boutique shopping, and gorgeous rental homes, Duck is an OBX gem.
Local tip: Sunsets here are unreal — bring your camera and have some Duck Donuts while you enjoy!
10. Corolla
A true adventure awaits in Corolla — where the wild horses roam. Rent a 4×4 or book a tour to explore the beach by vehicle. You’ll also find luxurious rentals and less crowded stretches of beach.
Local tip: Pack binoculars to spot horses from afar — and drive slowly!
Final Thoughts
